Jennie Belton Haygood

March 1, 1933 – November 8, 2005

 

Mrs. Jennie Belton Haygood, 72, of Willingboro, New Jersey died Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at the Alterra - Clare Bridge of Westampton retirement community.  Viewing will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, November 15, 2005 with funeral services starting at 11:00am at the Saint Paul United Methodist Church at Levitt Parkway and Charleston Road, Willingboro, New Jersey with Senior Pastor Dr. Henry Leona officiating. Interment to follow at the General William Doyle Veteran Cemetery, Arneytown, New Jersey with Chaplain (Major) Leon Bell, Jr. (US Army Retired) officiating.

 

Mrs. Haygood was a loving and devoted wife, mother, homemaker and friend. She was born in Camden, South Carolina and graduated with honors from Mather Academy in 1950. She then graduated Magna Cum Laude from South Carolina State College in 1954 with degrees in both English and German. While attending South Carolina State College, Jennie became a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Later, Jennie would continue academic studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California from 1963-64.

 

After teaching in Summerville, South Carolina for a brief period, Jennie married her college sweetheart, Roy W. Haygood, Jr. The young couple purchased their first home in Greenwood, South Carolina and what followed can be accurately described as a story book romance with the couple having celebrated fifty years of wedded bliss on June 04, 2004. The union produced two sons, Roy and Russell, with Russell having predeceased Jennie in 1999.

 

Jennie and Roy, and sons, traveled the world as an Army family before taking root in Willingboro in 1968. Jennie taught in the Willingboro Public School system for a number of years then stopped teaching to become a fulltime homemaker. She remained active in Willingboro’s civic and social organizations for many years. Roy and Russell were fortunate to have someone so dear who constantly challenged them to excel in educational endeavors.

 

She leaves to cherish her memory and to celebrate her home-going her devoted husband, Major Roy W. Haygood, Jr. (US Army Retired); son, Roy W. Haygood  III, of Flushing, Michigan (and daughter-in-law, Muriel); grandsons, Gregory and Ryan; great grandsons, Keyon and Jordan; brother, Lt. Col. Henry C. Byrd (USAF Retired) of Columbus, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Joyce S. Haygood (Russell) of Amherst, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Robert H. Haygood, Sr. and Rev. Dr. Lawrence F. Haygood; sisters-in-law, Velma H. Taylor and Delores H. Ross; nieces, nephews and a host of other dear relatives and friends.
