The McNair Family
Nora Green was born into slavery near Midway, Bullock County, Alabama on May 10, 1856. Her mother Phyllis, was a black Indian and had been given as infant, to Judge Green of North Carolina to educate. Phyllis had been taught to cook, sew, play the harp, etc. This girl child gave birth to Nora and Henry, fathered by the young master. Phyllis was born in Raleigh, N. C. and died at Midway, Alabama at age 94. She is buried at Midway.
In 1871, Nora met Arch McNair when she had gone to visit an aunt in Midway. They planned to marry but the Green family did not approve, so they ran away. Arch had belonged to a McNair family. One night Archie came by whistling "Happy Time in Georgetown". Nora climbed a high fence and they went to Georgetown, Georgia where they were married.
Archibald and Nora McNair came to Coffee Springs about 1884 and joined the Pleasant Valley Church. Archibald McNair had a Homestead Certificate #12819 signed by Grover Cleveland date November 21, 1894, consisting of 160 acres. In 1904, they bought lots and built in Coffee Springs.
Archie McNair b. June 27, 1885 d December 22, 1950 and Nora Green McNair who died June 13, 1950 are both buried at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Coffee Springs, Alabama. Born to this couple were 13 children:
