Geneva – "Negro Pair Married 78 Years Mark Anniversary"

FROM THE GENEVA COUNTY REAPER

Geneva (Special) – A Negro couple in Coffee Springs yesterday celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary. The couple, Arch and Nora McNair, lifelong residents of the Coffee Springs Community, are perhaps the oldest residents of the county. Arch was born June 27, 1855, while Franklin Pierce was President of the United States, and his wife was born on May 10, 1856.

They were married on May 28, 1871 when Arch was almost fifteen and Nora was just past fourteen years of age.

(Note: The above item must have appeared in the "Geneva County Reaper" May 29, 1947. Item is in possession of Ila Matthews of Coffee Springs, only living child of the couple.)
